5 dead in Ukraine mass shooting as authorities kill gunman who barricaded himself inside supermarket: reports

At least five people were killed and more than a dozen hurt in a mass shooting in Kyiv, with Ukrainian authorities killing the suspect – who had barricaded himself inside a supermarket.

Bullets flew in the Ukrainian capital’s Holosiivskyi district, a central urban area, where five civilians were slain on the street with more feared dead inside the market where the unidentified suspect took hostages.

“At the moment, five deaths are known. My condolences to the relatives and loved ones,” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X.

The Mayor of Ukraine revealed the shooter was killed during the supermarket-standoff with local cops.

“The shooter in Kyiv was liquidated during the ‌arrest,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app Saturday.

“Special forces of the…national police stormed the store where the attacker was. ⁠He took people hostage and shot at a policeman during his detention. Before ⁠that, negotiators tried to contact him,” the satement concluded.

Ten victims were being treated at area hospitals, with at least five others injured at the scene, according to Reuters.

The identity and motive of the shooter is currently under investigation, according to authorities.
