Bishop Kukah installed as Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has formally assumed office as the Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), marking a significant milestone in the institution’s leadership journey.

The installation ceremony took place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, during the university’s 16th Convocation Ceremony at the Convocation Arena, Igbariam Campus. The event attracted a wide array of attendees, including academics, government officials, students, and other distinguished guests.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, who officiated the installation, described Bishop Kukah’s acceptance of the role as a major boost for both the university and the state. He noted that Kukah’s vast experience, integrity, and national influence would play a vital role in advancing the institution’s reputation and development.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Communications, Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Rev. Fr. Pascal Salifu, the new Chancellor presided over the conferment of first degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and higher degrees on graduating students—an important milestone in their academic journeys.

In his inaugural address, Bishop Kukah stressed the need to strengthen academic excellence, reinforce institutional values, and strategically position the university for greater relevance within Nigeria’s education sector.

The Chancellor was accompanied by members of his delegation from the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, including the Chancellor of the Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Nuhu Iliya; the Bishop’s Secretary, Sr. Celestina Akpan DDL; and the Director of Communications, Fr. Pascal Salifu. Also present at the ceremony was Rev. Fr. Dr. Atta Barkindo, Director of the Kukah Centre.

The convocation ceremony not only celebrated the academic achievements of graduating students but also ushered in a new era of leadership for the university—one expected to be guided by vision, integrity, and a renewed commitment to excellence under Bishop Kukah’s stewardship.
