Public affairs analyst Ben Shemang has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Jos, lamenting what he described as a sharp decline from the city’s once-celebrated status as a peaceful tourist destination.
Shemang made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV, where he reflected on the changing narrative of Plateau State, a region historically known for its serenity and attraction to both local and foreign visitors. His comments come amid renewed concerns over recurring violence and insecurity in the area.
Speaking on the contrast between the past and present realities, Shemang referenced the state’s popular slogan and its global appeal in earlier years. He noted that Jos was once a top destination for relaxation and tourism, particularly among expatriates and Nigerians seeking leisure.
According to him: “Look at the motto of Plateau State ‘home of peace and tourism’. Why was it that the whites were always rushing there. People who needed to go on holiday in Nigeria were always talking about Jos. Today, people want to rather escape from that area.”
The analyst’s remarks highlight the growing fear among residents and visitors, as incidents of violence continue to affect daily life and economic activities. Once known for its cool climate and scenic landscapes, Jos has in recent years experienced cycles of unrest that have diminished its appeal as a safe haven.
Security experts have repeatedly called for stronger measures to address the root causes of the crisis, including communal tensions and governance challenges. Many also stress the importance of restoring public confidence and reviving the tourism potential of the state.
