Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, has highlighted the severe financial gap facing Nigeria’s military, pointing to the contrast between Nigeria’s defence budget and the scale of spending by global powers like the United States.…WATCH THE VIDEO HERE
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, he said, “If you look at the budget of the military, convert it to dollars, and imagine what you can buy with it. President Trump is looking for 1.5 trillion dollars to fight the war with Iran. They produce equipment. We do not. For every round of ammunition we buy, we buy it in dollars. For every piece of equipment we are buying, we are buying it in dollars. So we do not produce our own.”
Despite the financial constraints, he pointed put that the military has developed strong in-house repair capabilities.
He noted that Nigerian technicians can now rebuild completely destroyed armoured vehicles such as MRAPs back to full working condition using locally sourced parts, a skill set that did not exist at the same level before the insurgency.
While acknowledging that the military does not have everything it needs, he insisted that the forces are making the most of available resources and doing the best they can under difficult circumstances.
