The Nigeria Labour Congress has issued a scathing Easter message to President Bola Tinubu, declaring that Nigerians “never signed up for suffering” when they cast their votes. In the strongly-worded statement, Ajaero said citizens are burdened by escalating inflation and economic hardship that were not part of the social contract with the current administration. The labour leader demanded an urgent wage review, insisting workers’ income must guarantee life, not mere survival.
The NLC vowed to reject “mercantilistic politicians whose stock-in-trade are empty promises” and warned it would only support leaders with “clear, pro-people plans”. The congress also criticized attempts to criminalize peaceful protest, saying it would resist any such moves.
Security remains a fundamental right that the government must guarantee, Ajaero added, acknowledging recent successes but urging the state to “not look back” in its efforts. The message signals a more confrontational stance from organized labour as economic conditions continue to bite.
