COVID-19 Alert: Akwa Ibom orders tight border surveillance, activates rapid response teams amid regional scare

Akwa Ibom State Government has directed the Ministry of Health to activate “heightened surveillance across all entry points, health facilities, and communities.”

This directive followed a reported case of COVID-19 in a neighbouring state which has generated concerns and apprehension in Akwa Ibom State.

In a statement jointly signed by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, and the Commissioner for Health, Ekem John, the government stated that “disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams be placed on alert to promptly detect and manage any suspected cases.All these have been done .”

It advised the people “to observe preventive measures, including regular hand washing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers, wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.

Similarly, residents have been urged to avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, refraining from handshakes and physical greetings, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing occur.

“Healthcare workers are also reminded to maintain a high index of suspicion and adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols.”

The statement quoted Governor Umo Eno as directing the Ministry of Health to “strengthen their collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and coordinated response.

“The Government hereby reassures residents of its commitment to safeguarding public health, ” while the public is encouraged to rely only on verified information from the Ministry of Health and to avoid spreading unverified reports that may cause unnecessary panic.”
