US Vice-President JD Vance has claimed that Iran may carry out suicide bombings in the United States but their suicide bombers will be armed with ‘nuclear suicide bomb vests’ instead of conventional explosives, which could kill thousands, even tens of thousands of people.
Vance claims Iran may attack US with suicide bombers
Speaking at a cabinet meeting at the White House, Vance spoke about potential risks posed by Iran to the US, and warned that Iran could carry out attacks with suicide bombers who may have small nuclear weapons attached to their bomb vests.
“People who walk into a crowded supermarket and have a vest on, and they blow up the vest and a couple of people get killed. What happens when what’s on the vest is not something that can kill a couple of people but can kill many, many, tens of thousands of people?” Vance asked.

JD Vance claimed that Iran may build suicide bomb vests containing “small nuclear weapons”, which could cause widespread devastation and kill tens of thousands.
“We’ve seen bombers injure many people by blowing themselves up, but what if the vest is capable of killing thousands or millions of people? If this vest contains small nuclear weapons, it will cause widespread devastation, and we anticipate that.” the US vice-president said.
The US has acknowledged that the smallest nuclear bomb it ever built weighed just 23 kilograms but had a yield equivalent to ten tonnes of TNT. While the possibility of even smaller nuclear bombs has often been theorised, their existence has never been officially acknowledged by any nuclear-armed state.
Will Iran pursue nuclear weapons?
Meanwhile, Vance’s comments come amid growing calls within Iran to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) an pursue a nuclear weapons program.
“Membership in the NPT has not only yielded no benefits for Iran in gaining access to peaceful nuclear energy, but it has also, beyond the NPT, merely aided the espionage activities of Israel and the United States against Iran. Iran must withdraw from this treaty as soon as possible,” an editorial in the Tasnim News Agency reads.
Notably, Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on the first day of the ongoing war, had issued a fatwa banning the use of nuclear energy to develop weapons.
However, analysts point out that Ali Khamenei’s fatwa (religious decree) essentially died with him as Shia Muslims do not follow deceased Ayatollahs. This means the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei’s son, could reverse that decree and allow Iran to build nuclear weapons.
