A Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Tunji Bolaji, has said that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from office in the coming days ahead of his governorship ambition.
Bolaji disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, noting that Adelabu had already secured the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pursue his political aspiration.
According to him, the minister’s planned resignation reflects his commitment to ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms within the power sector before stepping down.
He said Adelabu met with President Tinubu on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, where he presented a detailed report on his stewardship of the power sector over the past two and a half years.
“President Tinubu commended the minister for his dedication and the progress recorded, particularly in laying a strong policy foundation for the transformation of the power sector.
“The president also granted his consent and blessing for the minister to pursue his governorship ambition.
“In view of this development, Adelabu is expected to resign his position as minister of power in the coming days.”
Bolaji added that during the meeting, the minister highlighted key achievements under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity, and implement reforms across the power value chain.
He also said a major highlight was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), which are designed to guide long-term development of the sector.
According to him, the framework provides a roadmap for energy security, expanded access to electricity, renewable energy integration, and sector efficiency.
He further explained that the SIP outlines specific actions, timelines, and responsibilities for implementing reforms across generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as investment, regulation, and capacity development.
Bolaji added that the plan also addresses recent challenges in power generation, including gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
He said Adelabu expressed appreciation to the President for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s power sector development and national progress.
