The Federal High Court in Kano has declined to grant an ex-parte application filed by the state’s deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam, seeking to stop impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the State House of Assembly.
The deputy governor had through his counsel Umar Danbaito sought for interim injunction to halt the impeachment process set in motion by the state assembly.
The plaintiff wanted the court to halt all proceedings with regards to the impeachment pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons.
However, iIn his ruling, Justice M. Shaibu denied the application on the basis that the applicant failed to meet the necessary legal requirements for granting interim order through ex parte motion.
He declined the stay of proceedings and ordered the applicant to serve the respondents with the court processes to formally notify the State House of Assembly for it to file a response.
The court then adjourned the matter until 16 April, 2026, for further hearing.
It could be recalled that the Assembly on March 5, said it had served an impeachment notice on the deputy governor over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The impeachment process was initiated after Abdulsalam refused to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress with his principal, Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
