Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, has stepped down from office following mounting political pressure and allegations from the Kano State House of Assembly, which had initiated moves to impeach him over alleged misconduct.
In a statement released Friday by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Gwarzo’s resignation was described as a difficult but necessary decision aimed at preserving stability in the state and ensuring smooth governance.
“The Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office… This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State,” the statement read in part.
The group explained that recent developments had affected the deputy governor’s ability to effectively carry out his duties.
“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realisation of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the deputy governor,” it stated, adding that “it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve.”
Despite stepping down, the Kwankwasiyya Movement dismissed claims that the resignation was an admission of guilt, insisting that Gwarzo remains innocent of the allegations raised by the Kano State House of Assembly.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him,” the group emphasised. “The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people.”
According to the statement, the decision was also taken to reduce political tension and demonstrate leadership responsibility.
“Rather, this step is a demonstration of statesmanship and a commitment to peace, political maturity, and the avoidance of unnecessary tensions that may hinder governance and development in the state,” it added.
Following his resignation, Gwarzo is expected to intensify his involvement in the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
“He has resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement… in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement noted.
The movement also urged supporters and residents of Kano State to remain calm and continue supporting efforts toward peace and development.
The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier accused Gwarzo of misconduct and issues related to the discharge of his official duties, prompting lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings before his resignation.
