A dramatic enforcement operation by the Lagos State Taskforce turned chaotic on Thursday as suspected miscreants and street urchins set sections of the Fagba Railway Corridor ablaze in a desperate attempt to evade arrest.
This was contained in a statement on Friday by the Director of Public Affairs, Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, who stated the incident, which unfolded during an early morning raid, underscores the growing desperation of criminal elements as authorities intensify efforts to reclaim public spaces across Lagos.
The railway corridor, long identified as a hotspot for criminality, has reportedly harboured a range of illicit activities including robbery, rape, cultism, drug trafficking, and the operation of illegal brothels allegedly involving underage girls.
The area has also witnessed repeated attacks on moving trains, with passengers pelted with stones by hoodlums.
Acting on intelligence and sustained complaints, the Taskforce led by its Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, launched a coordinated clean-up exercise spanning Alfa Nla, Okekoto, Pen Cinema in the Agege axis, and the troubled Fagba corridor.
However, what began as a routine enforcement quickly escalated when hoodlums resisted arrest, setting parts of the corridor on fire.
The blaze threatened nearby facilities, including Sunbeth Filling Station and a branch of Zenith Bank, raising fears of wider destruction.
Swift intervention by Taskforce operatives, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, brought the inferno under control, preventing further damage and restoring calm to the area.
Several suspects were apprehended in connection with the arson and other criminal activities. Authorities confirmed that all arrested individuals will be prosecuted under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
Reacting to the incident, CSP Akerele issued a stern warning to youths engaging in unlawful acts, declaring: “Crime is not a career. We urge young people to channel their energy into productive and legitimate pursuits.”
The operation marks the third major clean-up exercise in the Fagba axis this year, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance approach to criminal hideouts and its resolve to ensure the safety of residents.
