‘Most shameless Govt in Nigeria’s history’ — ADC slams APC, alleges plot to destabilise opposition parties
African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fostering conditions that weaken opposition parties, warning that such a trend could endanger Nigeria’s democratic stability.
In a statement issued by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the current administration as “the most shameless government in Nigeria’s history,” while pointing to recent developments within the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) as evidence of what it called a broader pattern.
According to the ADC, tensions within the PRP began shortly after a delegation led by its National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, paid a courtesy visit to the ADC leadership about three weeks ago. The party said speculation soon followed that a political coalition might be considering the PRP as a possible platform.
“About three weeks ago, the leadership of the PRP, led by its National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, paid a courtesy visit to the National Chairman of the ADC. A few days later, rumours began to circulate that the coalition leadership was considering the PRP as an option,” the statement read.
The ADC, however, dismissed the speculation as unfounded but noted that the rumours appeared to have triggered internal divisions within the PRP.
“Although this is not true, it took only that single whiff of speculation for a faction to emerge almost overnight in what had been a historically tranquil political party, challenging the leadership of Baba-Ahmed,” it added.
The party argued that the episode reflects a wider challenge confronting Nigeria’s democracy.
“This is the reality of Nigeria’s shrinking democratic space under the All Progressives Congress. The government may continue to deny any involvement in the crises within other parties, insisting that these are merely internal failures, but the pattern is visible. The world can see what is happening. More importantly, they can see where this path leads.”
Raising concerns about the long-term implications, the ADC questioned whether voices within the ruling party were willing to caution against what it described as a dangerous political approach.
“But here is the question: is there no one within the APC who can caution those engineering crises in opposition parties that they are, in fact, sowing the seeds of national instability?” the statement queried.
The party warned that weakening opposition platforms could ultimately backfire, limiting democratic choices for citizens and increasing political tension.
“A political strategy that is anchored on sabotaging every opposition platform is ultimately self-destructive. When people are left with no options, they are, in reality, left with no choice,” the statement concluded.
