NAF Strengthens Air-Ground Coordination to Boost Counter-Insurgency Operations
The Nigerian Air Force has intensified efforts to enhance operational effectiveness in counter-insurgency campaigns through improved air-to-ground integration, as part of a broader strategy to consolidate air power in complex battle environments.
This was highlighted during a courtesy visit by the Director General of the Air Power Centre of Excellence, PO Obeya, to the Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre on April 17, 2026.
The engagement underscored the Service’s commitment to strengthening doctrinal development, capacity building, and operational coordination—key components required to sustain air superiority in asymmetric warfare settings.
During the visit, Obeya held strategic discussions with the Commandant of AWDC, GI Jibia, focusing on advancing modern air warfare practices and improving joint operational frameworks.
Central to the deliberations was the enhancement of Air-to-Ground Integration (AGI), a critical operational concept that ensures effective synchronization between air assets and ground forces. The approach enables precise and timely deployment of close air support, intelligence, surveillance, and rapid response capabilities in support of ground operations.
The Nigerian Air Force noted that continued investment in professional military education and doctrinal refinement remains essential in developing personnel capable of responding to evolving security threats.
The initiative aligns with the strategic direction of the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, whose leadership has prioritised innovation, inter-agency coordination, and operational excellence in air power application.
By strengthening internal collaboration and advancing AGI capabilities, the Air Force aims to improve mission effectiveness and responsiveness in ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the country.
The visit reflects a sustained effort by the NAF to reinforce its operational readiness and enhance its role in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity amid persistent security challenges.
