Navy Palms Over Two Suspected Impersonators to Police in Calabar
The Nigerian Navy has handed over two suspected naval impersonators to the Nigeria Police Power for additional investigation and attainable prosecution in Calabar, Cross River State.
The suspects, recognized as David Norbert Aleji and Francis Gideon Isaac, have been arrested by personnel of NNS Victory on March 10 after they have been discovered wearing navy camouflage and in possession of suspected pretend navy identification playing cards.
The suspects have been subsequently handed over to the State Legal Investigation Division of the police in Calabar.
In a press release issued by the Director of Naval Data, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, preliminary findings confirmed that Aleji allegedly paraded himself as a lieutenant of the Nigerian Navy, whereas Isaac impersonated a midshipman.
Each suspects reportedly claimed to be serving aboard NNS Sagbama.
Additional investigation revealed that Aleji, who had beforehand undergone some coaching on the Maritime Academy of Nigeria in Oron, was the mastermind of the impersonation scheme and had recruited Isaac, who resides with him.
The Navy mentioned a search performed at their residence led to the restoration of extra military-related gadgets, together with a jungle hat and a pair of shoes.
The suspects reportedly admitted that they bought the uniforms and equipment and produced the identification playing cards themselves.
The Navy reiterated its dedication to defending the integrity and fame of the service and warned that impersonation of navy personnel constitutes a prison offence.
It additionally urged members of the general public to report such acts to related authorities, noting that impersonation undermines the credibility of the armed forces and brings the service into disrepute.
