The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) Monday handed over critical water infrastructure to the Yobe State Water Corporation and RUWASA to address water scarcity in conflict-affected communities.
The centerpiece is the expanded Buni Gari Water Supply Project, now serving Buni Yadi and environs in Gujba local government area.
Key components include four solar-powered boreholes, 300,000 liters of storage capacity, a 50 KVA grid connection, and extensive pipeline reticulation. The NEDC also executed a 6-kilometer pipeline network in Buni Yadi.
In a separate intervention, the commission supplied submersible pumps and accessories to repair broken-down boreholes across the state.
NEDC Yobe coordinator, Prof. Ali Ibrahim Abbas, said the project aims to push more water to Buni Yadi and environs.
“This project has been successfully completed. Today we hand over the facilities so the state government will continue to manage them,” he stated.
Receiving the project, Yobe Water Corporation General Manager, Ba’Abba Habu, described it as a “huge project” that will greatly benefit the towns. He pledged to sustain the initiative for the welfare of residents.
Local residents welcomed the project, expressing hope it will reduce waterborne diseases and ease the burden on women and children who trek long distances for water.
