State chairmen of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Thursday pledged loyalty to the Musiliu Akinsanya-led leadership of the union.
The endorsement came during a meeting at the union’s national headquarters, amid renewed leadership tensions following what officials described as a failed attempt by a rival faction to take over the secretariat.
They state chairmen described MC Oluomo as a dependable and forward-looking leader, while reaffirming their commitment to his leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the union, the general secretary, Kayode Agbeyangi, accused the faction led by Tajudeen Baruwa of orchestrating violence and destruction at the national secretariat in August 2023.
He alleged that the group looted property, damaged facilities, and attempted to destabilise the union.
Agbeyangi said the union has compiled a detailed record of events and transactions from August 2023 to date, including ongoing court cases, and has made the document available to security agencies, relevant authorities, and the Ministry of Labour.
He stated that several cases cited by the rival group as victories remain pending, with courts yet to grant enforcement, adding that an appeal has been filed and a stay of execution secured.
Also speaking, the national financial secretary, Comrade Uwem James, traced the crisis to disputed congresses and delegate conferences dating back to 2019, while alleging widespread manipulation and disregard for court orders.
He said the 2023 delegate conference was marred by irregularities, disenfranchising members across regions and prompting multiple legal challenges, many of which are still before the courts.
Other officials insisted that the union’s leadership remains committed to due process, transparency, and the rule of law, while urging members and the public to rely on verified records as the legal battle continues.
