President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has called for calm, unity, and responsible leadership as Nigerians face increasing economic hardship and global uncertainty.
The CAN president in a Palm Sunday message, reflected on the biblical account of Jesus Christ entering Jerusalem with humility and peace, noting that the symbolism remained relevant in today’s tensed climate.
He said, “Jesus entered Jerusalem with calm resolve, not as a display of power, but with a message of peace, purpose, and hope. That choice still speaks to us today.”
The CAN president noted that many Nigerians are currently burdened by rising living costs, with families struggling to cope amid economic pressures.
He linked the situation partly to global developments, including tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which he said are affecting global energy markets.
He said the ripple effects are evident locally, with increases in fuel prices, transportation costs, and food prices worsening the strain on citizens.
“For many Nigerians, the concern is immediate, how to cope, how to plan, and how to stay afloat,” he said, adding that in such uncertain times, the tone of leadership is critical.
Okoh stated that leaders must demonstrate restraint, empathy, and a commitment to the common good, noting that “true leadership is not always loud but is seen in actions that ease burdens and bring people together.”
He also called on the Church and Nigerians of all faiths to embrace unity and mutual support, drawing inspiration from the spirit of Palm Sunday, when people gathered in hope and humility.
“This is a time to stand for peace, strengthen unity, and support one another. We must remain a steady source of light and hope,” he said
