Nigeria Police Force has dismissed an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, alongside four other officers over the unlawful killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, who confirmed the development on Sunday while addressing newsmen in Abuja, said the affected officers will also face prosecution in line with the law.
The incident, which led to the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, triggered widespread outrage, particularly on social media, where calls for justice intensified.
Police authorities had earlier disclosed that the घटना occurred on April 26, 2026, when officers attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence suggesting that Ogidi had been intercepted while allegedly attempting to send a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”
Following the killing, Usman and members of his team were taken into custody and transferred to Force Headquarters for investigation and disciplinary proceedings.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, subsequently approved their dismissal and recommended prosecution, forwarding the decision to the Police Service Commission for ratification in accordance with due process.
The decision followed findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which reviewed the case and other internal procedures surrounding the incident.
At an emergency press briefing in Abuja, the IGP said the panel concluded that the officer and his team breached established rules governing the use of firearms.
According to the findings, the officers “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
The committee recommended their immediate removal from service and further legal action.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP had said.
He stressed the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power, adding:
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”
The police said the action underscores its commitment to accountability and adherence to professional standards within the Force.
