Salihu Kantigi: From humble beginnings to continental impact

From the humble soil of a peasant farm in Kantigi, where life was measured by the rhythm of planting and harvesting, emerged a man whose intellect and ambition would one day place him at the forefront of Africa’s technological landscape.

Kantigi is an agrarian and fishing-catching community in Edati local government area of Niger state.

Salihu Isah Kantigi’s journey is the kind of story that inspires awe, not merely because of the success he has achieved, but because of the path he carved with determination, integrity and a religious commitment to uplifting others while en route.

Salihu’s rise from modest beginnings to consulting for banks across Africa on sophisticated database systems is an ultimate testament to his brilliance and resilience. In West Africa, only a few companies in the tech ecosystem can match the reach, influence, and impact of Softech, the enterprise he founded and now runs admirably. From conquering the Nigerian market to expanding across West Africa and now making strategic inroads into East Africa, starting with Kenya, Softech has become synonymous with technological excellence. Salihu’s vision and execution have positioned his company not merely as a market player but as a benchmark of innovation.

With the trajectory he is on, it is no exaggeration to assert that in a few years, his expertise will be sought after not only across Africa but also globally.

Yet, what distinguishes Salihu is not only his professional achievements but the rare combination of humility and loyalty that defines his personal relationships. Despite his meteoric rise, he remains deeply connected to his roots and those who shared his early journey. Many, when blessed with success, drift away from their humble beginnings, leaving behind old friends and connections. Salihu maintains strong ties with those who knew him when he was just another aspiring boy with a dream, ensuring that friendship is never transactional but genuine and enduring. In a world where relationships are often overshadowed by wealth and status, his dedication to friendship is a refreshing exception.

Salihu’s generosity extends far beyond friendship and permeates every sphere of his humanitarian engagement. Personally, I have benefited from his benevolence when I was getting married, when I sought to float my own company and even during my mundane runnings. What sets him apart is that his support is often silent, unobtrusive, and transformative. He quietly uplifts members of your family, extends assistance to schoolmates, and supports countless others in realising their projects.

During Ramadan, he spares no effort or expense to ensure that those without means are well-fed and cared for. In Suleja, where he dwells, it is said that despite the presence of numerous wealthy individuals in his neighborhood, he is the only person approachable for financial support without hesitation. His generosity is not about recognition but about impact, the kind that changes lives often without the recipient knowing the full extent of his intervention.

Beyond his philanthropy, Salihu has distinguished himself as a mentor and educator. Across Nigeria, he has nurtured a generation of young tech enthusiasts, guiding them with a combination of rigour, patience, and vision. His mentorship is hands-on and deeply personal; he takes young people under his wing, teaching them the intricacies of technology, database management and software development, grooming them to emerge as proud tech experts in their own right. Salihu’s commitment to education is boundless, offering free training sessions in Minna, Abuja, Lagos and beyond, ensuring that financial limitations never bar talent from realising its potential. Many who now lead projects, manage teams, or helm startups owe their foundational knowledge and confidence to his guidance.

Integral to Salihu’s’s success is his dedication to lifelong learning and staying ahead of technological trends. Long before AI captured the world’s imagination, he had already delved deep into its potential. As early as 2018, he was forecasting the seismic disruptions that AI would trigger across industries, a vision that has since materialised and continues to accelerate. His commitment to updating his knowledge is not merely professional prudence; it is a reflection of his curiosity and desire to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. By consistently staying ahead, he ensures that his mentees, his company, and his community benefit from the most advanced tools, techniques, and insights.

What ties all of Kantigi’s gestures together, his professional achievements, humanitarian efforts, mentorship, and unrelenting pursuit of knowledge, is a profound sense of empathy and vision. His success is not an end in itself but a means to empower others, to create opportunities, and to leave an enduring impact.

His character has left such a mark on me personally that, in recognition of his influence and in homage to his late parents, I am dedicating my soon-to-be-released book to them. Salihu has often spoken of his longing for them to witness his accomplishments, and in dedicating my book, I hope to honour their legacy and the extraordinary son they raised.

In reflecting on his journey, one sees a life that defies simple categorisation. Salihu is a visionary entrepreneur, a humanitarian, a mentor, and a scholar, a man whose intellect is matched by his compassion. His story challenges the notion that success must come at the expense of one’s roots or relationships. Instead, he exemplifies the principle that true success is measured not merely by personal gain but by the breadth and depth of one’s positive impact on others.

As Softech continues to expand across Africa, its growth is emblematic of Salihu’s broader mission, to place African technology on the global map, to demonstrate that homegrown talent can compete with the world’s best, and to ensure that every opportunity he seizes benefits not only himself but those around him.
