Newly inducted science laboratory technologists at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have been warned against falsification of data and other unethical practices as they formally joined the profession.
The caution came during the induction of over 140 graduates of the Faculty of Natural Sciences into the Science Laboratory Technology profession.
Administering the oath, Acting Registrar of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, Ibadan, Dr. Peter Oluwafisoye, stressed that accuracy, reliability, traceability and integrity remain non-negotiable in laboratory practice, noting that laboratory results influence decisions that affect lives.
He warned that falsification of data and negligence could have far-reaching consequences, adding that some research works have been withdrawn after publication due to fabricated results.
“We have seen research works withdrawn after publication due to fabricated data. Accurate documentation and proper reporting are essential. A single act of negligence can have far-reaching consequences,” he said.
The inductees were drawn from three specialised options within the Department of Science Laboratory Technology: Biological Science Techniques, Chemical/Petroleum Techniques and Microbiology Techniques.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoffrey Kumleng described the ceremony as a celebration of years of perseverance and hard work, urging the graduates to uphold integrity, diligence and responsibility in their professional careers.
“The profession you have chosen is vital, and society depends greatly on your commitment and professionalism,” he said.
Oluwafisoye further highlighted the relevance of science laboratory technology to national development, noting that the profession cuts across healthcare, environmental monitoring and protection, food safety and quality control, industrial and petrochemical processes, research and innovation, as well as education and capacity building.
He encouraged the new professionals to strive for excellence, embrace innovation and contribute meaningfully to national and global development.
Speaking on behalf of the inductees, Miss Dinchi Laven appreciated the university for equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for professional practice. She noted that science laboratory technologists play important roles in healthcare, environmental sustainability, research and industrial growth, even though much of their work is often carried out behind the scenes.
She urged her colleagues to remain curious, committed and courageous as they navigate emerging challenges in the profession.
