The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially restored students’ union activities after years of suspension.
A new set of student leaders were inaugurated in a ceremony that signals a fresh phase in student unionism in the institution.
The vice-chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, presided over the swearing-in of the Students’ Union executives, hall chairpersons, and representatives of the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) during an event held Tuesday at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Akoka campus.
Describing the ceremony as a major step toward the full return of union structures, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Johnson Agunsoye, stated that the inauguration marks the beginning of a phased process that will lead to the formation of a complete Students’ Union Executive Council and Students’ Parliament in the 2026/2027 academic session.
As part of the university’s support for the newly inaugurated leadership, the vice-chancellor approved a ₦5 million take-off grant, temporary office accommodation, and the refurbishment of an 18-seater bus to aid union activities.
In her remarks, Prof. Ogunsola congratulated the new executives for their perseverance in restoring unionism, which had been suspended since 2016 following violent protests that disrupted academic activities and led to damage of university property. She urged the student leaders to see their positions as an opportunity to serve responsibly and promote dialogue, discipline, and constructive engagement.
On behalf of the new executives, Students’ Union President Bolaji Akinpelu described the development as a fresh start, unveiling what he called the “Renaissance Administration.”
