Reports have emerged of a growing rift between the United States and Israel amid the ongoing war with Iran. A private phone conversation revealed underlying disagreements between the two nations, indicating that the US now feels increasingly entangled in the conflict.
Phone call reveals sharp differences
According to sources cited by Axios, a tense exchange took place between US Vice President JD Vance and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the call, Vance directly questioned several pre-war assertions made by Netanyahu, particularly the claim that regime change in Iran would be straightforward and that internal uprisings could easily destabilise the government.
A US official noted that prior to the conflict, Netanyahu had portrayed the situation in Iran as much easier than it actually was. He suggested that Iran’s government was fragile and could be quickly pressured into significant change. However, the reality on the ground has proven very different. Iran has demonstrated far greater resilience and capability than expected, inflicting significant challenges on the US. Vance reportedly told Netanyahu that many of his pre-war predictions were ‘overly optimistic,’ especially the assumption that the Iranian public would rise against their government.

The dispute extended beyond the phone call itself. The following day, an Israeli newspaper published a report claiming that Vance had expressed strong frustration with Netanyahu. Both the US and Israeli governments later denied the report. Despite this, concerns arose within the White House that some Israeli officials might be attempting to undermine Vance’s image, an allegation that Israeli authorities have dismissed.
