What is Kalibr-PL Missile? Russia offers lethal deep strike weapon to India with range of…, will allow Indian submarines to…

Russia has once again offered India the 3M-14E Kalibr-PL missiles. The Kalibr-PL is a land-attack cruise missile system that can be deployed on submarines, significantly enhancing their strike capability.
Under the latest proposal, these missiles would provide deep-strike capabilities to Indian Navy submarines. The missile has a range of up to 1,500 km. Notably, deploying them would not require major modifications, as they can be launched using existing 533 mm torpedo tubes on Indian submarines.

Russia Offers Kalibr-PL Missile to India

Russia has once again offered the Kalibr-PL missile system to India. In early last year, Rosoboronexport and Rubin Design Bureau presented this offer during a meeting with an Indian Navy delegation in Moscow.

During the presentation, they highlighted that the Kalibr family is not just a single weapon but a modular system designed for multiple roles. They emphasized that it can convert conventional submarines into multi-role strategic platforms without requiring major structural changes.

India Working on Indigenous SLCM Project

At the same time, India is developing its own submarine-launched cruise missile (SLCM) under Defence Research and Development Organisation as part of Project 75-Alpha.

This missile is planned to be deployed on future nuclear submarines. However, it is still under development and is expected to take around 4–6 years to become fully operational.

Why Kalibr-PL is Important for India Right Now

Since India’s indigenous SLCM project will take time, analysts believe that the Kalibr-PL missile could serve as an effective short-term solution. It can meet the Indian Navy’s immediate operational requirements by providing advanced strike capabilities.

What is Kalibr-PL Missile?

The Kalibr-PL is a Russian land-attack cruise missile, also known as the 3M-14E. It is considered one of Russia’s most powerful and accurate cruise missile systems, designed for high-precision strikes.

Range and Deep Strike Capability

One of the biggest strengths of the Kalibr-PL missile is its long range of up to 1,500 km. This allows submarines equipped with it to strike enemy land targets such as command centers, airbases, and ports directly from the sea, without coming close to the enemy territory.

Launch System, Guidance and Warhead

The missile can be launched from standard 533 mm torpedo tubes, meaning no major design changes are needed in submarines. It uses satellite guidance and inertial navigation systems to hit targets with high accuracy.

The Kalibr-PL can carry a warhead of around 450–500 kg, making it highly effective for strategic military operations.
