Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is seeking financial and diplomatic support for the country. After visiting Saudi Arabia, where he secured around $2 billion in aid, Sharif travelled to Qatar. His arrival in Doha drew attention after his aircraft was escorted by fighter jets from the Qatar Emiri Air Force.
As Sharif’s plane entered Qatari airspace, Rafale fighter jets accompanied it until landing, forming a security escort. A video shared by Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office on social media platform X showed the moment.
Sharif appeared visibly pleased with the gesture. From inside the aircraft, he thanked the Qatari pilots and leadership, including Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He described the escort as a matter of pride and honour for himself, the government, and the people of Pakistan. He also saluted the pilots mid-flight, calling the reception a “great honour” multiple times during his remarks.
Rafale jets and Qatar’s air power
The escort was carried out by Dassault Rafale fighter jets, which are part of Qatar’s advanced air fleet. Qatar is among a select group of countries operating Rafale aircraft. The country currently has 36 Rafale jets in its inventory.
Qatar initially ordered 24 Rafale jets in 2015 and later expanded the deal by adding 12 more, bringing the total to 36. These jets are of the advanced F3R variant, equipped with modern radar and weapons systems, making them highly capable in combat and surveillance roles.
Reports have also suggested that Qatari air force personnel have provided training to Pakistani pilots on Rafale systems, indicating growing military cooperation between the two countries.
Sharif’s visit to Qatar comes at a time when Pakistan is looking to strengthen economic ties and secure financial backing from Gulf nations.
