Who is Christoph Schnellmann? Mastermind behind Asia’s largest Jewar Airport set to transform Delhi-NCR aviation, he is from…
As the much-awaited Noida International Airport in Jewar gears up for its inauguration on March 28, attention is turning to the man leading this massive project. Behind the scenes, years of planning, coordination and execution have gone into building what is expected to become one of India’s biggest aviation hubs.
The airport is being seen as a major step forward for connectivity in the Delhi-NCR region. It is also expected to reduce pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and improve travel options for millions of passengers.
Who is Christoph Schnellmann?
Christoph Schnellmann is a Swiss aviation expert with decades of experience in managing and developing airports around the world. Before becoming the CEO of Noida International Airport (NIA), he worked with Flughafen Zurich AG, the company responsible for developing the Jewar airport.
He has also been involved in India’s aviation sector earlier through Zurich Airport’s stake in Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. This gave him valuable on-ground experience in handling airport operations in India.
Over the years, Schnellmann has built strong expertise in airport management, infrastructure development and large-scale project execution. His global experience has played an important role in bringing the Noida airport project to its current stage.
Building a New Aviation Hub
Schnellmann took charge as CEO in 2020, at a time when the project was still in its early stages. Since then, he has overseen its development through multiple challenges, including delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airport is being developed in phases. In the first phase itself, it is expected to handle a large number of passengers every year. Future phases aim to significantly increase capacity, making it one of the largest airports in the country.
Focus on Passenger Experience and Sustainability
One of the key priorities for Schnellmann has been to ensure that the airport is efficient and easy to use for passengers. The airport is designed to offer smooth travel experiences with the help of technology and digital systems.
At the same time, there is a strong focus on sustainability. The airport aims to follow green building standards, use renewable energy and reduce its environmental impact as much as possible.
Handling Challenges Behind the Scenes
Developing a greenfield airport of this scale is not easy. The project required multiple approvals, land acquisition and coordination between different government bodies and private partners.
Schnellmann has worked closely with both central and state authorities to keep the project on track and ensure it is ready for operations on time.
A Big Moment for the Region
With the inauguration now around the corner, the project is entering a new phase. The focus will soon shift from construction to full operations.
For Schnellmann, this marks an important milestone. For the region, the airport could transform travel, boost business activity and strengthen Noida’s position as a growing economic hub.
