Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor following a recent vacancy in the state’s leadership.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating, “The Governor has transmitted the name of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.”
According to the statement, the nomination aligns with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy governor where a vacancy exists.
Muhammad added that the decision followed extensive consultations, noting that the governor urged lawmakers to “grant the necessary approval to enable the nominee to assume office.”
Garo, 48, is described as a seasoned political administrator who previously served as Kabo Local Government chairman, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, ALGON chairman in Kano, and deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 elections.
The deputy governorship seat became vacant after the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026, with the Kwankwasiyya Movement stating, “This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State.”
