ADC will not bow to pressure, says David Mark; Aregbesola vows party’s mission cannot be stopped
The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has reaffirmed the party’s determination to remain steadfast despite mounting political challenges, declaring that the party would neither bow nor retreat in its quest to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Mark made the assertion while addressing party stakeholders at the 2026 ADC National Convention held on Tuesday in Abuja.
He stressed that the survival of Nigeria’s democratic system depends on a strong and resilient opposition.
“We will not surrender, because what is at stake is not just the ADC or the opposition, but the survival of our democracy,” he said.
He further emphasized the party’s growing relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape, insisting that the ADC remains a people-driven movement.
“The ADC cannot be wished away. It belongs to the Nigerian people,” Mark added.
In the same vein, former Osun State Governor and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola, declared that no force can derail the party’s mission to reposition Nigeria.
Aregbesola maintained that the ADC remains committed to its rescue agenda, noting that attempts to weaken the party would ultimately fail.
“No amount of effort to weaken us will work. Just as no one can stop the sun from rising, the ADC cannot be stopped,” he said.
He also stressed the independence of the party, stating that the ADC is not controlled by any individual or influenced by external forces.
“The ADC is not beholden to any individual, including biased regulators. Our mandate comes from the Nigerian Constitution. We are here on a rescue mission,” Aregbesola stated.
The former minister further raised concerns about governance in the country, warning against the emergence of poor leadership and lack of accountability.
“We cannot allow kakistocracy to take root in Nigeria. This administration promised renewed hope four years ago. Three years in, it is still the same promise. Nigerians deserve to see real results. We have a responsibility to ensure accountability,” he added.
The statements by the ADC leaders come amid growing political realignments and heightened preparations ahead of future elections, with opposition parties seeking to strengthen their platforms and expand their national appeal.
Political observers note that the firm stance by the ADC leadership signals the party’s readiness to play a more prominent role in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
