The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has issued a stern warning to motorists and the general public against any form of assault on its personnel, reaffirming the Corps’s zero tolerance stance on attacks against officers performing their lawful duties.
This follows the arrest of a suspect involved in the assault of an FRSC patrol team in Edo State.
This was contained in a statement signed by Osondu Ohaeri on Thursday in Abuja and made available to journalists.
According to the statement, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 11 April 2026, when a patrol team from RS5.1 Edo Sector Command flagged down a vehicle for a seat belt violation. The driver defied the officers and fled with an FRSC Marshal still engaged in enforcement.
He subsequently mobilised a group of commercial tricycle operators who launched a violent attack on the officers.
“During the assault, the Marshal was pushed into a gutter and physically attacked, while the Team Leader also sustained injuries. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident,” he said.
He said through swift collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), the suspect was tracked and apprehended.
“He has since confessed to the crime and expressed remorse for his actions,” he said.
The FRSC commended the professionalism and prompt response of the security agencies in ensuring his arrest.
The Corps Marshal stressed that assaulting law enforcement officers is a serious criminal offence that will attract the full weight of the law.
While noting the suspect’s remorse, he maintained that due legal process will be followed and appropriate sanctions applied to serve as a deterrent.
He urged members of the public to cooperate with FRSC personnel and utilise established complaint channels rather than resorting to violence.
The Corps reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads while upholding the rule of law and protecting its officers.
He added that the injured Marshal is currently in stable condition and receiving medical care.
