In Gombe, a quiet but significant transformation is taking place in classrooms as more than 11,000 children across six local government areas benefit from a digital learning programme introduced by the state government in partnership with EIDU.
Each morning, school compounds that once struggled with low engagement now come alive with energy. Pupils arrive earlier, eager to learn, and increasingly confident in their abilities. Among them is nine-year-old Ibrahim Mohammad, whose renewed enthusiasm reflects a broader shift unfolding across the state.
“He doesn’t want to be late anymore,” says his teacher, Mallama Rayyanatu, who has taught for nearly two decades. “You can see it in how they hurry to school, solve basic maths problems and handle reading and spelling tasks. They are more engaged now than before.”
The programme focuses on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy among early grade learners, addressing a deeper national challenge. In Nigeria, where more than 10 million children are out of school, and many others struggle to read at expected levels, the issue is no longer just access to education, but the quality of learning itself.
“There is a learning crisis where children finish school without being able to read and write fluently,” says Professor Aishatu Umar Maigari, Gombe State’s Commissioner for Education. “In Gombe, we decided to confront that challenge directly.”
The reform is rooted in strong political commitment. Shortly after assuming office, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya declared a state of emergency in education, placing learning outcomes at the centre of his administration’s priorities. That vision led to the partnership with EIDU, a global organisation known for tackling learning poverty through structured, technology-supported approaches.
At the heart of the initiative is a shift away from traditional teaching methods toward a more structured and personalised model of instruction. Teachers are equipped with smartphones containing step-by-step lesson guides, while pupils engage with exercises tailored to their individual learning levels, often working in small groups.
“It enriches the normal classroom pattern where teaching is largely teacher-centred,” Professor Maigari explains. “Now, we have individualised learning supported by digital tools.”
Lessons are delivered in clear stages, ensuring that each child builds essential literacy and numeracy skills progressively. Pupils advance at their own pace, allowing those who struggle to catch up while enabling faster learners to move ahead without being held back.
Importantly, the system also generates real-time data, allowing education officials to monitor progress from the classroom to the state level. This provides early insight into learning gaps and enables timely interventions.
“We can see what is happening in classrooms as it happens,” Maigari says. “If engagement drops, we know immediately and can respond.”
Evidence from similar programmes in countries such as Kenya suggests that this approach can significantly improve learning outcomes. In those settings, structured digital lesson guidance has led to measurable gains in literacy and numeracy, improved teacher effectiveness, and higher pupil engagement.
In Gombe, early signs point in the same direction. Teachers report that lessons are easier to deliver, more consistent, and better aligned with pupil needs. Instead of improvising, educators can focus on supporting individual learners and managing classrooms more effectively.
The impact extends beyond academics. Attendance has improved, and pupils are showing greater curiosity and participation in class activities. For many, the interactive nature of the learning process is a major source of motivation.
“When a child sees their progress, it encourages them to keep coming to school,” Maigari notes. “We are also seeing more girls attending school regularly.”
For Ibrahim, the change has been personal. Once quiet and uncertain, he now arrives early, eager to participate. Lessons broken into manageable steps have helped him build confidence gradually, turning learning into a more rewarding experience.
Across schools, similar stories are emerging. Once passive children become active participants, classrooms are evolving into more dynamic learning environments.
The programme is not designed to replace teachers, but to support them. Training provided through the initiative has introduced new teaching methods and tools for assessment, helping educators deliver lessons more effectively while focusing on the needs of each child.
At the system level, the availability of real-time data is strengthening decision-making. Learning outcomes are no longer abstract but measurable, allowing for more targeted interventions and continuous improvement.
“What we are building is not just a programme, but a system that ensures children are enrolled, retained, and able to learn,” Maigari says.
Encouraged by early results, the state government has approved plans to scale the initiative from 11,000 to 40,000 learners, extending its reach across more schools and communities.
For many pupils, the most profound change is not just improved academic performance, but a renewed sense of belief.
At the end of the school day, Ibrahim lingers near the learning device before heading home. His teacher says the difference is clear.
