Laura Loomer Loses Defamation Battle Against Bill Maher!
A federal judge has dismissed Laura Loomer’s defamation lawsuit against comedian Bill Maher, siding with the late-night host over remarks made on his HBO show.
In an April 23 ruling, U.S. District Judge James Moody concluded that Maher’s comment about Loomer during a 2024 episode of Real Time with Bill Maher was intended as humor, not a factual claim. The lawsuit stemmed from a segment in which Maher speculated about Donald Trump’s personal life and said, “I think it might be Laura Loomer.”
According to the ruling, the episode’s context made it clear that Maher was joking. The judge wrote that a reasonable viewer “would have understood Maher was making a joke, and not a statement of fact about plaintiff and President Trump.”
Moody also found that Loomer did not demonstrate measurable harm tied to the comment. Court documents noted that her income increased during the same period and that she maintained access to political circles, including interactions with Trump.

Maher had previously defended the remark during testimony, explaining, “It’s just…this is just comedy. This is…these are jokes.”
Loomer responded publicly after the decision, calling the outcome “outrageous” and saying it “should be reversed on appeal.”
“It is beyond the pale for any judge to say that a woman can be accused of having sex with a man and have it be brushed off as ‘a joke,’” she wrote.
Maher and HBO have not publicly commented on the ruling.
