Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ites, on Sunday, staged a rally in Bauchi in support of Iran, urging Muslim faithful to live according to the teachings of Islam, even as a US headed for Pakistan for talks with Iran.
Zeenatuddeen Zakzaky, wife of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, led the protest during the 5th International Conference on Islamic Thought themed, “The State of Affairs and the Way Out.”
The conference was organised by the Sisters and Academic Fora under the leadership of Sheikh Zakzaky.
Speaking at the event, Zakzaky urged Muslims to align their lives with the teachings of the Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet.
She said, “Muslims must live their lives according to how Allah enjoined us in the Qur’an and the way the Prophet has brought it to us.”
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Sunday he was sending negotiators to Pakistan for new talks with Iran on ending the war.
The news that Vice President James Vance-who led the last round of talks with Tehran in Islamabad, but came away with no deal would not travel this time emerged in a confusing manner, as members of Trump’s cabinet had said he would go.
“It’s only because of security,” Trump told ABC News, dismissing any notion that Vance was removed from the trip due to concerns about his ability to secure an agreement with the Islamic republic.
“JD’s great,” Trump added.
Washington’s envoy to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, had told ABC News’s “This Week” program: “As the president announced, the vice president with our key negotiators looks like they are going to head out for another round.”
Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNN’s “State of the Union” that Vance had been “leading the negotiations from the start” though he did not explicitly say he would travel this time.
The Strait of Hormuz remained closed on Sunday amidst the stand-off. Iran on Saturday declared it shut again to shipping – one day after saying it would reopen the strategic waterway. (AFP)
