Aspirant for the Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency seat, Mukhtar Usman Galadima, has said the Nwonyo Fishing Festival has the potential of evolving into a major tourism driver if properly developed and sustained.
Galadima, who was the immediate past Director of the Department of Development Control in the FCTA, described the festival as a cultural asset with deep historical roots and growing relevance beyond its host communities.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of festival in Wukari, Galadima said the event has continued to attract attention over the years, noting that with the right investment and consistent promotion, it could rank among the country’s leading cultural tourism attractions.
According to him, Nwonyo Lake, which hosts the annual festival, provides a natural setting that supports both cultural expression and tourism activities.
The Town Planner described Nwonyo lake as one of the longest in the region, adding that its calm and scenic environment offers opportunities for broader recreational and economic use.
Galadima expressed satisfaction with the organisation of this year’s festival, commending community leaders and other stakeholders for what he said was an improved and well-coordinated outing.
He noted that such cultural gatherings, if sustained, could contribute to local economic growth by attracting visitors, creating small-scale business opportunities and boosting the profile of the area.
On the occasion of Jukun Youth Day, he called on young people to take deliberate steps towards preserving their cultural heritage through active participation and the organisation of similar events.
Galadima said encouraging youth-driven cultural initiatives would not only sustain traditions but also help project the identity of the Jukun people to a wider audience.
He added that continuity in such festivals would strengthen community cohesion while opening up new avenues for cultural exchange and tourism development in the area.
