The governor of Nasarawa state, Abdullahi Sule, has said delivering routine government responsibilities such as paying salaries, building roads, and providing basic infrastructure should not be celebrated as achievements, but as a minimum duty of leadership.
The governor said this at the 59th inaugural lecture of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Wednesday.
He said true service lies in initiating projects that directly and sustainably impact citizens’ lives beyond their expectations.
He said if a governor says his achievement is paying salaries or building roads, then he does not understand leadership, adding that it is what they were elected to do.
He urged public office holders to adopt innovative approaches to governance, adding that thinking “outside the box” is key to solving persistent societal challenges.
Sule cited the example of recurring market fires in the state, which previously led to repeated government interventions in the form of financial relief ranging from ₦2 million to ₦10 million for affected traders.
He said the cycle was broken when his administration decided to construct a modern market designed to prevent such incidents.
Sule credited improved financial capacity partly to economic reforms introduced under President Bola Tinubu, while also stating the importance of prudent resource management at the state level.
Also, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ike Neliaku, announced plans to establish the first World Public Relations and Leadership University in Nasarawa state adding that the initiative is being developed in collaboration with global partners and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Information.
