Reps Pass Electoral Act Amendment To Fast-Track Pre-Election Disputes

An Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill seeking to define jurisdiction for pre-election matters has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

The proposed legislation provides that pre-election matters shall commence at the Federal High Court, while pre-election disputes arising from presidential elections shall be initiated at the Court of Appeal.

The bill also seeks to eliminate jurisdictional conflicts by clearly outlining the courts with authority to hear such matters.

It further stipulates that no court shall entertain pre-election cases outside the provisions contained in the amendment.

According to lawmakers, the objective of the bill is to speed up the delivery of justice in pre-election disputes.

The House also considered and approved another Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill aimed at introducing flexible, reliable, and technology-driven methods for the service of election petition processes.
