Tunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers over the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision followed recommendations by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which found the officers culpable after reviewing the incident.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Anthony Placid, force public relations officer, said the committee concluded that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
“Consequently, the FDC has recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police has approved the recommendations and forwarded same to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process,” the statement read.
The development comes after a viral video on Tuesday showed the moment the suspect was shot while being restrained by a police officer in Delta State.
In the footage, which lasted less than two minutes, the male suspect was seen seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back.
The incident sparked widespread public outrage, with many calling for justice and the prosecution of those involved.
Earlier, the Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the officer, identified as ASP Usman Nuhu, who was subsequently transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.
Police spokesperson in the state, Bright Edafe, had said the command took swift action following the incident.
The case has now been escalated for further legal proceedings, pending ratification by the Police Service Commission.
